A conveyor chain is one of the hardest working parts on an asphalt paver. It drags hot mix from the hopper to the auger and screed, hour after hour, in abrasive dust and high temperature. When it starts to stretch or wear, the first sign is rarely a breakdown. It is a mat that no longer looks right: segregation, uneven thickness, cold joints at the end of a pass. • Chain stretch beyond adjustment range – the tensioner is at its limit and the chain still hangs loose.

• Visible plate wear or cracking – thin plates, elongated holes, hairline cracks near the pins.

Measure a fixed number of pitches with the chain under normal tension and compare it with the specification length. Then inspect three points: pin and bushing clearance, plate thickness at the hole, and sprocket tooth profile. If the chain has stretched beyond the adjustment window, or if plates are visibly worn, replacement is cheaper than the risk of a mid-shift failure on a highway job.
